Review from Holly A. 2 friends 12 reviews Felton, CA 8/9/2011 I had a group of coworkers come to town and we rented several cabins for a two night stay in the redwoods. The cabins were clean and well equipped. We stayed right on the river and heard the babbling San Lorenzo the whole time among giant redwoods. We got to have some meetings on the beautifully manicured property. Ok this place is rustic! You are staying in the SC mountains, this ain’t the Dream Inn! So don’t expect to get your pillow fluffed, but thats why we love it. It’s low key and down home here and a great place for a quiet relaxing hassle free get away. Lina was super nice and helpful. She went out of her way to help. These are the nicest cabins to stay in in the Valley. Oh yeah! No dogs here. You can see why as their Landscaping is 100% Was this review …? Review from Kris Z. 5 friends 48 reviews Woodinville, WA 12/22/2011 1 Check-in Here This is my second time staying here. The first time was alright. the second time well..I think I’m probably going to stay somewhere else next time. I’ll preface this with the fact I grew up here about a block down the road. I stay here because my folks’ place is pretty full, and it’s nice to be on “vacation” when visiting the parents (you all know what I mean). The staff here is a little on the odd side. You can tell they’ve gone through their share of bad experiences. There’s been a collected list of “don’ts” spread through various parts of each cabin. This of course makes the place seem a little…unfriendly. All the places inside are pretty charming. Knotty pine on the walls, the larger ones have a gas insert for heat. The kitchens are alright. Sure there’s fairly cheap silverware, though this is probably the first place I’ve ever stayed that has coffee filters, but no coffee or tea. They also come with mini fridges, and a television. The location is pretty nice. Right in the redwoods, along the San Lorenzo river. Very close to Henry Cowell state park. Close enough you can hear the trains at Roaring Camp in the distance. It’s far enough away from highway 9 that the traffic noise isn’t very obnoxious. Those are the good parts. The bad parts. The beds aren’t the worst I’ve been in, though they have what I call “roadkill pillows” because they’re pretty flat. The one thing I have to say that knocked it down to a 2 star, unfortunately, are the showers. The shower heads are at about my nose level. Now I’m pretty short, about 5 1/2 foot. If you’re tall and using a shower here, I’m really sorry. Second, they’ve installed super low flow heads so you’re going to have a heck of a time rinsing. Finally, the hot water is hot enough…but barely. Now I’ve stayed at various bed and breakfasts, hotels, and cabins all over the world. This is actually the worst shower I’ve ever dealt with. I’ve even been to campsites with better showers. This vacation we decided to just take showers at the parents place. So there you have it. I’m hoping to try some other places next time I come over. It’s too bad because this place could be pretty awesome. The folks here could just use a bit of an attitude change, and maybe should try staying in their own cabins as guests. Was this review …? (1) Review from Gaytha w. 57 friends 19 reviews Oakland, CA 7/31/2011 1 Check-in Here I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. It’s a small paradise; It’s a perfect low-fi getaway that is close enought to town that you’ve no need to panic if you forgot supplies. Sad part: The management office people are NOT polite, disorganized, and act REALLY put out whenever you ask for something. Checking in/out omg! “What do you want?” literally! For $150+ a night, and they charge for EVERYTHING. not worth the bad attitude. Because of this woman’s way of dealing with things, she lost two potential regulars. I love the redwoods, and the hiking in the area is primo. If you’re fed up with city living, this is a nice place to stay, just don’t ask for anything, and try not to interact with the office people. A good thing to know: If you want to go down to the boardwalk for the day, consider taking the Big Trees train into Santa Cruz. It drops you off right at the boardwalk, and you don’t have to hassel with parking at all. (which is the WORST by the Boardwalk) Was this review …? (2) Review from James G. 0 friends 7 reviews Pleasanton, CA 3/3/2011 Stayed at #8 cabin. Fantastic!! Clean and roomy, right on a river with rustic charm. Stayed for a get away night and will plan to come back with the family for a longer time. We usually camp nearby, but when those times come when I do not want to drag out all of the camp gear, I will call this place. Was this review …? (1) Review from Dale H. 84 friends 216 reviews Sacramento, CA 1/16/2011 (3.5 stars) I have great memories from this place. When I was in between tenth and eleventh grades (1984) my family moved from the Bay Area to Santa Cruz. During this time, we had to stay in this resort for a couple of months until we found a house to rent. The layout of the cabins was standard, but nice. We had a stand alone cabin so didn’t have to worry about hearing others. The place was always kept clean. The river was nice to swim in during the summer months. Little store just down and across the highway. Was this review …? (3) Review from G M. 8 friends 129 reviews El Cajon, CA 7/29/2010 Our trip was to pick up our kid from UC Santa Cruz for the year with a little R&R tied in. I brought my mom along we spent a day in San Francisco (about 90 minutes north). We arrived at the resort in the early evening and a young lady checked us in. No “welcome”, no greetings, just “may I have your credit card?” At the front desk area there are some steep stairs going up to the owners’ (?) living quarters and I saw a pair of curmudgeonly looking legs at the top. No word from that area though. Just legs standing guard. No information on the area or the cabin was given. We rec’d our key and went to our cabin. The cabins looked like they had recently been renovated on the inside. Very nicely done. I liked the lay-out and the quality of work. Our cabin was a duplex and I had the room with the shared wall. You can definitely hear the neighbors in the shared wall room, but ear plugs fixed that in the evening. The cabin could sleep 8 people and there were just two of us. The river is about 25 yards from the back porch. Beautiful. Lotsa birds and deer in the mornings. – Kitchen – with some dishes and cleaning supplies. Need to bring a pan or two. – Refrigerator – small, but just fine – Futon, twin bed, queen bed, and two sofa sleepers – BBQ in the back – Great back porch – Parking – we brought the F350 crew cab truck and we were able to park it – Might wanna bring sleeping bags and/or extra bedding – TV remote is on the key (we didn’t catch this fact and called the office to ask for the remote, curtly (curmudgeonly) told, “IT’S ON THE KEY!” click. – Grocery store in town – “gourmet-type” and an Albertsons, Vons or something along those lines farther into town. – Hwy 9 is the shortest route to Sta Cruz, but it was closed for road work. Plenty of other quick ways to get to Sta Cruz. – Lotsa hiking opportunities in the area Overall, a pleasant stay. The “owners” leave you alone, the cabins are nice, the location awesome. I would stay again, but with more family/friends. Was this review …? (2) Review from Kimberly W. 0 friends 5 reviews Concord, CA 11/8/2011 Stayed here over the summer, just reviewing now. My husband and I brought our 3 kids 12-14 years and they loved it. Beautiful grounds, very quiet. We really loved being able to enjoy the Santa Cruz Boardwalk during the day, and then just come back to our cabin and relax, bbq and have a couple glasses of wine without having to worry about driving somewhere for dinner after a long day. Spent half a day down by the river right below our cabin and had the beach to ourselves, it was great. Only complaint, sadly, is the people who run the place…they could be way more friendly and helpful. Still, we will probably be back! Was this review …? Review from Michael A. 13 friends 3 reviews Los Altos, CA 7/11/2011 My Wife and I stayed here last weekend and we had a great experience we stayed in Cabin 4 and it was so nice, huge redwoods right outside our windows, the outdoor hot tub is a treat, and the owners are really nice, I have heard negative reviews about them and I have to say they were very nice people and very accommodating. Henry Cowell state park surrounds the cabins and is a great place to run and hike and soak in the beauty of mother nature. We will be back to stay at the Fern Berkeley River Resort and hopefully stay longer. Was this review …? (1) Review from Brandon h. 3 friends 7 reviews Walnut Creek, CA 4/19/2011 Made a reservation for Fern Berkeley River Resort 3 days before arriving, they were totally accommodating and nice, you cannot make an on-line reservation which is a little bit of a bummer but I can appreciate doing things the old fashion way every once in a while. We were placed in Cabin 12A I believe initially, I looked at pictures online and was excited about the cabin. The girlfriend and I arrived around 7pm and had no problems checking in, the gentlemen at the front desk was nice, this place is clearly family owned as they have signs that say, “when you arrive ring the bell and give us a moment to come down. if you arrive after hours, ring the bell and give us a minute to get dressed before coming down.” As I was checking in I was informed that I had been upgraded at no charge to Cabin 1. 12A just has a microwave, toaster, and coffee maker, wheras Cabin 1 has a full kitchen with stove, sink, refrigerator and no shared walls. The room was clean, had everything we needed (including dishes), and was very peaceful. The only complaints that we had was that the WI-FI was pretty slow and the shower head was pretty low pressure initially and after adjusting it came out too fast. The atmosphere and peacefulness of the cabin for sure outweighed those two small annoyances. One thing to mention is the river, which is steps away from all of the cabins (some have back decks that face it) and that can be heard throughout the entire camp, really nice and serene. If we are ever in the area again, we will for sure be checking into Fern River. They have very reasonable prices for where it is at, it is close to town, I wish we could have stayed more than 1 night! Was this review …? (2) Review from Randy F. 89 friends 219 reviews San Francisco, CA 6/10/2009 I loved this place. Take it from someone whose bedroom looks out upon I-280 from Bernal Hill in densely-packed San Francisco; a view of a forest with a giant deck outside a pristine little Cabin #4 is perfect. No, I wouldn’t have liked it as much with any other cabin, so I recommend you ask for #4. A beautiful little one-bedroom cabin, #4 has a small gas fireplace in the living room, a cute kitchen with a table and chairs, a parking space out front, a bedroom with a comfortable bed, a large ADA bathroom, and a huge deck out front overlooking the creek. The best part was the window in the living room with a 200-foot tall redwood only 3 feet away, split into about 5 trunks. So my view on the side of the cabin rocked!! Giant sequoia trees, growing up to the sky. Gorgeous!! TIPS: Bring everything. Bring blankets, pillows, an ice chest filled with food, coffee, filters, pots & pans, creamer, Yahtzee, Scrabble, everything. It’s like having a little house of your own in the woods. (They will provide pots and pans at the office for a $20 deposit.) (p.s. they have a volleyball court, if you want to get busy with nets, friends, etc.) FYI: I almost forgot: Fern Berkeley River Resort is next door to Roaring Camp, the small-gauge railroad that will run you through the redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains. You will occasionally hear the train’s whistles through the forest. It’s awesome! Listed in: Was this review …? (5) (2) Review from Abby S. 109 friends 173 reviews Tracy, CA 1/13/2009 I’m going to be lazy here.. I wrote reviews on things WELL before I found & started using Yelp. This review was originally posted on 01/16/2007. The handsome man and I co-wrote it LOL : Within the first 30 minutes we were disappointed. We tried to make coffee (with the coffee we brought since we were warned by earlier reviews that they didn’t provide coffee), when I got up to check on it I noticed there was water and coffee grounds all over the counter, under the microwave, in the drawers, flowing onto the floor, etc the coffee makers carafe wasn’t made for the coffee maker and the water wasn’t going into the carafe!! Oh well, after a 30 minute clean up, it was time to relax. That is when we discovered the furniture was right out of the Flintstones. The couch was a lovely piece, carefully handcrafted from solid granite and padded with a polyester cover that crinkled when you sat on it. This thing was so hard that you could break a bowling ball on it. Off to the bedroom in hopes of a place to find some comfort. Oh no, it too was as hard as stone, and just as comfortable. A bead of sweat formed on my forehead as I contemplated two nights trying to relax while standing. Perhaps sleeping in the car was an option, but the 28 degree night temperatures made that option a rather chilling thought. If you want a nice, spacious cabin in the Redwoods, with a decent kitchen, just pack up your air beds, a few garbage bags, folding chairs and this will be the place for you. And don’t forget to bring the earplugs, because the walls are so thin that you can carry on a conversation with you neighbors (ours played guitar and sang late into the night). For us, the romantic weekend ended a day early when we politely handed the key back and said we were leaving early. This was quickly followed by the inn keeper frantically searching for the words to say ‘No Refunds, No Negotiations’. I already knew that, the website had stated it and I wasn’t going to ask for one! What a terrible disappointment. Great concept, extremely poor execution. The parts we forgot to mention that were equally annoying or insulting: The towels, and blankets had “FERN Berkeley River Resort” SPRAY PAINTED on them! scratchy and tacky, nice. Pros: Private Hot Tub, heater in cabin worked excellent Cons: All furniture was extremely uncomfortable, Horrible towels ***** WOW I just went back and looked at their website. I can’t even tell which one we stayed in… I think they might have remodeled or something. They sure LOOK nice, but I’m leery Was this review …? (2) (3) (3) Review from sara h. 0 friends 4 reviews San Diego, CA 9/26/2011 This is an amazing place very quiet and serene. However make sure you bring what you need the people are not very helpful. However if you bring what you need you will have a great time. Was this review …? Review from Never Trust Robots x. 1 friend 4 reviews Seattle, WA 7/10/2011 First, the place itself is really pretty great, assuming you are not looking for luxury. It’s clean, quiet, nice woodsy environment. Yes, the bedspreads are cheesy, but who cares. I’ve stayed there on 4 or 5 occasions over the last 10 years. I would probably be giving it 5 stars except… well, the customer service is just ridiculous. I guarantee you that the people who are giving the place 4-5 stars have just never had anything to request or complain about in any way. They’ve come, stayed, slept, had a great time, and left. As long as everything goes smoothly, it’s all fine. Kindof lovely, even. However, god help you if anything, and I mean ANYTHING goes wrong or is missing or you need something. Read the other negative reviews. I had an experience there recently that honestly I don’t want to go into, because I may need to stay there again (my sister lives in Felton, and Fern River is the only game in town) and the manager there is just the kind of person to hold a grudge against someone for years. Apparently from reading the other reviews, the owner is as well so I’m glad I didn’t complain to him about the manager’s behavior. The people who work there are likely capable of acting nicely, but they feel utterly free to act beastly (e.g., hang up on you, laugh in your face, really bizarre things) if they feel like it. My only similar experience was trying to get a meal in Bucharest, Romania in the late 90′s (hopefully things have improved in poor old Bucharest) where waiters would bring you food you didn’t order and then insist you pay for it and yell at you if you balked. So, go there, stay and just don’t make any waves. You’ll have a good time. If something goes wrong or you have a request, think very hard before speaking up, because it probably won’t be pretty. Look at the (negative) reviews under “Fern Berkeley River Resort Motel” as well. Was this review …? (2) Review from Nicole M. 1 friend 11 reviews Santa Cruz, CA 3/27/2009 I think I saw the review from below 3 years ago on trip adviser… why in the world would she post that now… maybe some personal beef with the owners? That post was one of the ones that made me not want to stay at this resort, but I braved it anyway as it was one of the best rates during the winter in Santa Cruz that I found. Any way on to my review, This place is neat! it is defiantly not like your standard ultra plastic hotel. It is situated under some gorgeous redwood trees and over looks a quaint little river . There is a cute little beach that you can sunbathe on, have your kids play in the river, or hike across to be right in the state park. The grounds are maintained with lots of gardens, a volleyball/badminton court, ping pong tables, a game room, and a private spa inside a gazebo. As far as the rooms we stayed in room 11A and it was beautiful. There is a gas fireplace built into the wall, a flat screen tv built into the wall as well and a full kitchen. As far as renting pots and pans there is a 20 cleaning deposit, I was stoked, staying in hotels you can never cook, and pans? really? I just paid them the 20 and let them clean them! I wish I could do that at home. As far as the linens having fern river spray painted on them, yea it is a bit silly but I can see why. When I was younger I used to steal everything I could from hotels, sheets, linens soap, plates ect. When a blanket has been tainted this way it makes people not want to steal them. These are the nice micro fleece blankets and run about 80 a piece, I can understand a business not wanting to loose them, and besides the labeling is on the bottom of the blankets where you can’t see it unless you remove the bedspread. I would say a great place to stay, wonderfully private compared to any hotel I have been to, esp the appointment only spa! Was this review …? (1) Review from JIMandNANCI J. 0 friends 26 reviews Boulder Creek, CA 5/27/2008 I have stayed here a couple of times and find it to be the perfect little getaway. I have always stayed in cabin #2 because it has the gas log fireplace (which was actually the room heater controlled by a thermostat), but am going to stay in #3 next time because of the large deck it has overlooking the river. The place is not new and definitely is showing signs of age, but the setting is so nice and it’s close to everything. We live in Boulder Creek which is only a few miles from this place, but its location is perfect for a quick weekend away from the family or a romantic retreat with my hubby. The beds (or the one in cabin #2 anyway) is not exactly comfortable, but adequate. The spray painted blanket is absolutely hilarious and very tacky, but hey, who doesn’t spray paint the name of the establishment on their bedding???? The kitchen in the cabin is wonderful to have and we cooked a GREAT meal there last time we stayed. Bring your own pots & pans however, or you will need to pay a deposit to borrow them. There’s a BBQ outside along with a picnic table at each cabin, if you should be so inclined. The hot tub is fairly new and you make an “appointment” to use it. It is very private with tinted windows and suits are optional. It is probably the largest most wonderful spa I have ever been in!!! The only complaint I had was the the dirty skylight. It would have been wonderful to see out the giant skylight as we soaked in the tub. Having the spa room all to ourselves was so nice and it is a real bonus to this place. Some people complain about the towels, but I guess I’m just not that fussy. They were fine to me. I usually prefer a room with a bathtub, but didn’t really miss it with the outdoor spa. The wireless Internet was great and unexpected for the location. Again, this place is not new. There are people that complain about the reminders posted in the room about the old plumbing and such, but they obviously have never lived in the mountains on a septic system. The resort is old and has a lot of character. They have old fashioned things like board games to check out, a badminton court, a horseshoe pit, a fire pit, trails to the river for swimming and they are so close to Henry Cowell State Park and Roaring Camp Railroad, as well as major stores like Safeway & Longs. There is a Round Table Pizza next to Safeway that will deliver, or you can drive there in less than five minutes. I love this place and would recommend it to anyone that isn’t “uppity” and enjoys the Redwoods. Just be sure of your reservation as their cancellation policy is pretty tough. Was this review …? (3) (1) Review from larry B. 2 friends 20 reviews Carmichael, CA 8/19/2009 First I have to say I have never visited a place like this. The setting was great, despite the drought you could hear the river which wasn’t very far from our cabin(#10). And the wail of the steam locomotive from nearby roaring camp railroad only added to the ambiance. A problem was the very thin walls and the noisy folks in cabin 9. The cabin itself was spotless so I couldn’t blame the staff for the ants, which were the biggest i have ever seen. I guess my biggest complaint was the lady in the office. She was rude when we checked in and rude when we checked out. For the price, which was not a bargain, i would have expected a smile and welcome and thanks for the business when we left. All things considered I would say that this place had a nice location and was clean but was overpriced by far and left me feeling disappointed. We won’t be returning. Was this review …? Review from Dori I. 0 friends 2 reviews San Carlos, CA 10/25/2010 Why drive 300 miles north when you can go to beautiful redwoods an hour away from the most points in the Bay Area? I loved the rustic feel of this place set next to a wonderful river. We just spent a rainy weekend but had loads of fun. We had a view of a redwood tree. Hiking nearby is great and so is the funky town of Felton. People need to keep in mind that this place is rustic and you are in cabins. These cabins are not $500 a night and facing an ocean so scale expectations to be a cosy step up from a very nice tent cabin. Private, with view of river, microwave, refrigerator etc. Be prepared to bring all food items and a few pots and pans just as you would camping or rent them from the office. It is important to be honest about your guest numbers and when they will arrive. Not sure if all cabins have a DVD so bring your laptop- whatever if you are a TV type. We ate in the entire time so can’t comment on local restaurants. Would like to come back in the summer. This is definitely one of my spots! Was this review …? (2) (1) Review from Kim C. 0 friends 9 reviews Lafayette, CA 8/18/2008 Our family stayed for the second time this past week and enjoyed our stay very much. When looking for accommodations in the Santa Cruz area for our family of six I was astonished by the prices of the dive motels and hotels. The decent places were way out of line when you add kids. The Fern Berkeley River Resort prices are far less expensive, especially when you factor in the ability to cook meals. Taking a family of six out for meals three times a day for a week would have doubled our vacation cost. The ability to walk to Henry Cowell State Park and Roaring Camp for free entertainment, as well as playing in the River all reduced our costs as well. We were able to go on several day trips to Natural Bridges State Beach, the “world famous” Mystery Spot, the lesser known Big Foot Museum, as well as Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (which currently has a great deal going Wed/Thurs nights after 5:00 you get unlimited rides for just $9.95). The setting is beautiful and there’s berries, grapes and apples to pick. You can hear the whistle of the steam train throughout the day. This place seemed to have something for everyone. We also thoroughly enjoyed the great deals at the Abbot’s Thrift Store in Felton. I’m absolutely in love with the Natural Foods Store, New Leaf, in Felton as well. I felt like I was in grocery store heaven. My only complaint would be the very firm mattresses. My back is still hurting. It’s the one thing that would keep me from coming back.
